Supernova

This painting shows the view from an inhabited Earthlike planet about 10 light years from a star that has just gone reached the end of its life. These types of stars are of the Blue Giant variety, Gamma rays are the main concern here; when there are nearby terrestrial planets, these will interact with the atmosphere converting nitrogen into poisonous nitrogen oxide. Any ozone layer could be damaged enough to allow the surface to be exposed to harmful radiation, killing many of the life forms that may exist there.
