| MERCURY |
![]() |
With a mean distance of 57 million km and a highly eccentric orbit Mercury is the inner most of the sun's planets and the hottest. Temperatures on the sunlit side can rise to 450°C, and fall to -170°C on the side turned away . A molten iron rich core generates a strong magnetic field. There is a rarefied atmosphere made up from hydrogen, helium and oxygen, this is probably a product of the solar wind and or out gassing from the interior Interesting surface features include immense cliff faces, that can reach 2km in height and be many hundreds of km's in length. The very noticeable; 1500km wide Caloris basin, which was the result of a large asteroid colliding with Mercury early in its history. This impact scar is ringed by concentric cracks & ridges. Seismic energy radiating through the interior created rough hilly terrain on the opposite side of the planet. |
